Our new baby .....

..... was born Saturday. That's right, our families 100% organic vegetable garden. We have spent the last week reading up on organic gardening, composting and keeping chickens. We are getting closer than ever to becoming self sustaining. This is definitely Cheryl's dream. Joey recently jumped on board too. Especially after watching Food Inc.. Next in line is Kaighty, convinced by her PE teacher the she needs to follow tho food pyramid or risk death. Avery, well Avery has no interest in eating healthy or being healthy, for that matter. Once we decided to do this, we knew it should be organic. We are going to hire every beneficial bird, frog and worm to protect our precious food, poison free (more on this to come). Even the ants and bees get to stick around for this one. Some friends of ours have a tiller and were gracious enough to let us borrow it for the weekend. They even offered up soil advice and extra seeds. Thanks John and Rebeka, your the best!

This would end up being the spot. The only spot in our backyard that gets about 8 hours of summer sun. Two of my 3 trees that were harvested from some local woodland, had already died, so relocating the 3rd was no problem. Saturday Joey began tilling by 8:30am. Note the single pallet in the background.

The 2 square yards of mushroom compost and potting mix were delivered by 11am.

Sixteen wheelbarrow loads latter, the garden box was full. Measuring in at 6' wide by 27' long, she is a beauty. We used some timber on-hand to trim the sides and bottom portion of the bed where run off could have been an issue.

The view at sunset. What a productive and fulfilling day. Now I want to plant. Why does tomorrow have to be Easter? Can't we just stay home and get dirty? Please?
Oh, and we built a compost bin. She cost about $1.50 in hinges and screws. Isn't she a beaut Clark?
